The rise in power of the Macedonians further decreased the influence of Sparta. The city became even more isolated when it refused to participate in the congress of Corinth that focused on organizing the Greek city-states against the Persian intervention.
During the hellenistic period Sparta attempted to regain its power but to no avail, as it became involved in the conflicts among the successors of Alexander the Great.
In 195 BC the Romans, led by general Flamininus besieged Sparta and occupied Githion. At the same time, Sparta¢s domination of the coastal Lakonian settlements that made up the ¡Koinon¢ of Lacedaemonians and was forced into adhering to the Achaean League (192 BC).
