Evrotas river springs from the Mantineia area into Arcadia. Following an 82 km long course, having received water from more streams along the way, Evrotas ends up forming a delta and flowing into the Lakonic bay.
Ôhe Delta of the river Evrotas is one of the last wetlands in the sourthern part of Greece and is of great importance to the region.
Evrotas river banks are among the last breeding sites of the Caretta caretta sea turtle in the Mediterranean. Rare plant species, such as Linum phitosianum, which is uniquely native to this part of the world, can be found in the dune zone, the largest in the southern Peloponnese area.
Several parts of the Evrotas river can be accessed by the visitors. At wintertime, especially from January to April, when large quantities of water flow through the river, a great number of canoe fans visit it. They set off from the area of Vordonia, then turn right at the main route after the 2nd small bridge after Karavas. Evrotas can even be accessed at the area of Pyri, turning left, at 1 km after KEEM military camp, following the sign to the Airport, on the road Sparta-Githion.
210 species have been inventoried in the wetland, including water birds and birds of prey. Despite extensive human intervention, the area has been characterized by the Hellenic Ornithological Society as an ¡Important Bird Area¢, under whose responsibility the Evrotas Environmental Station operates, exactly to the south of Skala, on the road to Leimonas. It is easily accessible from the Githion - Neapolis main road. Visitors can contact us on the following telephone numbers: 6932888757, 210 8228704.
You may also visit the Information Point of the Association for the Protection of the Sea Turtle (tel. 210 3844146), on the Mavrovounio beach.
In addition to the Evrotas Delta, lake Stongyli is an equally important wetland with remarkable flora, located 1.5 km to the southeast of the Agios Georgios village opposite Elafonisos. It is a lagoon situated along the beach, divided into two smaller lag oons called Mangano and Nerantzionas.
In the Maleas area, close to the sea lies the renowned fossilized forest whose trees date back millions of years.
Moreover, the small lagoon of Asterio is considered an important natural reserve, as it draws many species of migratory birds, while Gerakas lagoon is a most impressive wetland too.
